Demarcation; A Description by R. Brothers / 2012

Installation view, Several Yards Apart But Close Enough For Easy Communication By Voice, NP3, Groningen
The performance and installation Demarcation; A Description by R. Brothers is centered around a wooden board which is divided into small sections of equal size. During the performance, a variety of colored wooden pieces is placed on and around the board. The actions of the performers, who place and move the pieces on the board, create unexpected mechanical sounds. This way a composition of colors, lines and sound is obtained. After the performance, the board and its environment are left as a static installation. Besides the board, the installation includes an umpire chair, strange game equipments, colored gym floor lines, sports uniforms with a logo of an aardvark (our mascot) and a real (stuffed) aardvark.
The origin of the wooden game board derives from a copper engraving of a city plan. This plan was designed by religious maniac Richard Brothers to illustrate his radical visions for his book A Description of Jerusalem (1801). Fragments of his remarkable biography can be found in various media (i.e. wall text, video) throughout the installation.

Foxholes / 2012
Installation view
The 'Foxhole'-model is a dual reference to both a mathematical function as well as a one or two-men fighting pit in warfare.
The mathematical function is used to test the strength of certain algorithms but visually resembles an interesting abstract form of inverted architecture, a theme that is obviously also present in the military connotation.
The sloppy and humorous sketches of these temporary one or two-man settlements made by the american army are in striking contrast with the perfect mathematical precision of the function.

If You Succeed You Will Bask in Glory / 2012
By: Tom Kok
"If You Succeed You Will Bask in Glory" is a research project with the focus on investigating the visual form of language. The aim is to expose the underlying structures of specific languages. At the center of this this research are two subjects: the Chappe Semaphore, and the communication between honeybees.

Love Wave / 2011 - 2012
By: Jan Willem Deiman
The Love wave project focuses on models of earthquakes. In contrast to the chaotic ruins created by the earthquake in reality, the schematic representations of earthquakes show a very regular, patterned image. One seems to have the vain desire to capture even the greatest forces of nature, that are completely beyond human control, by displaying them in a schematic way.
To make it even more contradictory, one of the earthquake models is called 'Love wave'. Giving the impresion of some warm and happy social-movement, the Love wave actually is one of the most devastating waves that move through and around the earth.

Demarcation; A Description by R.Brothers (small version) / 2011

This performance is based on a two-dimensional engraving of a city-plan. This plan was originally designed by Richard Brothers to be used as an illustration in his book "A Description of Jerusalem" (1801). In 1792, Brothers declared himself to be a prophet who was destined to design a new Jerusalem, according to the descriptions of prophet Ezekiel.
Brothers' designs - the exact and mathematic structure of his urban planning in particular - reveal his radical ideas.
The performance by Kok and Deiman consists of a physical model of the engraving, soundscapes and text-fragments from the biography of Brothers.

Copper Plates / 2009

Copper Plates is the result of the audiovisual performance Overpass (2008-2009), in which the synergy of video and sound, chaos and order is being investigated. The five copper plates show the relationship between live-generated sound and image. The images and sounds came about spontaneously and were captured on copper plates that can be seen as a residue of the performance.

Postcards / 2011

Demarcation / 2010
In Demarcation the spectator is confronted with a sequence of live-obtained images and sounds which create the expectation of a geometrical pattern, yet only partially fulfil this expectation. Subtly coloured lines interweave evenly in one another, but unexpectedly get interrupted or cancelled; repetitive sounds are abruptly being dislocated by vicious strikes.
Aside from this abstract audiovisual part, in Demarcation Kok&Deiman show self-made and found-footage images of buildings, maquette's and landscapes. The associative series of images directs to the (re)presentation of ideals as seen in diorama's and maquette's. These 'models', in their fragility and artificiality, embody the contrast between the ideal and the practical attainability of that ideal.
Demarcation offers a live-experience with surprising associative elements in which the relation between coincidence and design, expectations and realisations is being assayed.
